The Chance Encounter of Big Data and Sociology on an Operating Table

The paper reconstructs the scientific context of Big Data, mainly focusing on sociological predecessors. After that the advantages of Big Data research are presented in the light of some shortcomings of sociology’s traditional survey-based methodology. The differences between survey type research and analyzing Big Data are exemplified by a case study. The problem of prediction is also discussed.
