Gender Revolution? Converging Position of Genders

In the last decades it has become clear that the position of the two genders had converged in many respects, across the world (e.g. employment, education, health and political participation). As the process mostly affected women’ position and contributed to some losses in men’s position as well, the sociological and economic literature labelled the phenomenon as revolution. The term revolution refers to the significant changes ‘rebelling’ against the status quo based on the traditional gender order and the male breadwinner model. The paper describes the main factors causing and resisting the significant changes, and then it discusses the optimistic and pessimistic scenarios regarding the possible outcomes, and finally highlights the attitude changes concerning gender relations. It also refers to the concepts of gender egalitarianism and gender essentialism in order to better understand the contradictory processes.
