Similarities and Differences in the Friendships of Men and Women

The article briefly overviews why it is important to research interpersonal networks from a gender perspective and presents some international research the gender differences in the definition/content of friendships and the characteristics of friendship networks. Then it summarizes Hungarian results in this respect and describes available Hungarian data both regarding gender characteristics of Hungarian friendship definitions and trends, and differences over the past 20 years in the friendships of Hungarian men and women. With the change of the social context, significant changes in the gender differences of friendships networks can be observed.
