The Question of Space in Anthony Giddens’ Theory of Structuration

The category of space became important in contemporary discourses of sociology. The basic assumption of recent authors is that sociality is not feasible without spatiality. This was not always evident in sociology. Anthony Giddens is one of those theorists, who fostered the emphasis of spatiality since the seventies. After demonstrating the general features of the structuration theory, the paper focuses on the role of space-time concept in the “Giddensian” social theory. Besides simple reconstruction, the question should be raised, whether the space-time concept is an organic part of the structuration theory. Th e paper also examines, whether Giddens managed to elaborate a consequently relational concept of time-space – a task imposed by himself.
