„Getting to Know You…”

Knowledge, Power and the Body

Bill Nichols is one of the most important theoreticians of documentary film. This essay reflects upon the changes in its epistemology and representational politics. The author aims to place the intentions of important filmmakers mostly living in diasporas (or in a marginalized position) like Raoul Ruiz, Trinh T. Minh-ha. Poetic devices which serve to strengthen subjectivity become political weapons, questioning the power position of possessing knowledge, revealing personal authorial standpoint and thus undermining traditional viewer relations.
